Fri 6/7: Yes, you can do something. Pull out those orange T-shirts and be seen, pull out your phone and be heard. Join in!

Today is National Gun Violence Awareness Day…

Action #1 – Take a minute to remember what’s at stake. (Then do Action #3)

Action #2 – Go somewhere, do something.

Find an event near you here.

SB is having a day of service here. East Coast Bagels in Westlake Village is have an event here.

ALSO: A free public reading of the new play “#gunsense” is being offered at the Newbury Park High School Performing Arts Complex this Saturday evening at 6:30 p.m. The cast is a mixture of professional actors, community members, and NPHS student activists. All of them will be wearing orange, and activists are encouraged to attend and #wearorange as well!

From the producers: “#gunsense” is a collection of stories that speak to the heart of America’s gun debate. Scenes from today are set against the backdrop of what sensible gun ownership looked like only a generation ago. The main storyline depicts a caring father/daughter relationship that includes a love of sport shooting and takes place from 1976-1994. The father’s sensible relationship with guns is juxtaposed with non-linear scenes of today’s epidemic of gun violence. The play ends on the hopeful note of the Assault Weapons ban signed into law by President Bill Clinton. “#gunsense” frames the need for common sense gun-law reforms without demonizing responsible gun owners. By examining our not too-distant past, audiences can hopefully see a way forward.

Action #3 – YES on S.42, “Bipartisan Background Check Act of 2019” -Call your legislators and have your friends and family call theirs – especially in the RED zones.

background checks

If there was ever a feel-good gun bill, with the support of 90% of Americans to provide cover for the GOP against their NRA masters, S.42 – “Bipartisan Background Check Act”  is the one. The House version – H.R.8  (check cosponsors here) passed – with a 240 – 190 vote, more than 3 MONTHS AGO! What is taking the Senate so long? Is it really just the money?

Gun rights

If your senator is NOT on this list, (Feinstein and Harris are consponsors) make this call.

Script for NRA-controlled senators: I’m calling from [zip code] and I want Sen. [___] to not only cosponsor S.42 – “Bipartisan Background Check Act”,  but to demand that Sen. McConnell bring it to the floor for a vote. 90% of Americans want this legislation passed now. As long as my senator is not on record as a cosponsor, every shooting reminds us that our safety and that of our families is not [his/her] highest priority.

If they are on the list…

Script for co-sponsor senators: I’m calling from [zip code] to thank Sen. [___] for cosponsoring S.42 – “Bipartisan Background Check Act”. Please ask the senator to do everything in their power to bring this bill to the floor for a vote.

What?: If these guys are your Democratic legislators, talk to them too. Jared Golden, D (ME-2) and Collin Peterson D (MN-7) both voted AGAINST H.R.8.
