Stop Gina Haspel’s Appointment to Head the CIA. #BlockHaspel
(Mike Pompeo) “If experts believed current law was an impediment to gathering vital intelligence to protect the country,” he wrote, “I would want to understand such impediments and whether any recommendations were appropriate for changing current law.“
(Trump)“Mattis (has) stated publicly that he does not necessarily believe in torture or waterboarding. I don’t necessarily agree, but I would tell you that he will override because I’m giving him that power.”
Hey, is Mattis even still there?
What Trump and Pompeo need, of course, is someone who knows how to do it.
If your president ORDERS you to do something…
Tomorrow, May 9, Gina Haspel’s confirmation hearings for Director of the CIA will begin. The outcome of her nomination will send a clear signal to the world about where the United States stands on torture. There has been bipartisan opposition to torture since the Convention Against Torture was signed by President Reagan in 1988 and a myriad of professional groups who have reiterated their objections to torture on the grounds that it is inhumane, ineffective, and violates human rights. It is critical that we communicate to our senators that this nomination is antithetical to our historical bipartisan condemnation of torture. On Friday, Haspel tried to withdraw her nomination, but was talked out of it. Tough questions from our two Senators on the Intelligence Committee may confirm her decision to withdraw.
Minimum script: I’m calling from [zip code] to urge Senator [__] to vote “No” on her nomination to head the CIA, based on her past involvement with torture.

News update: The CIA has given Congress classified documents they’ve hand-selected related to the controversial undercover background of Gina Haspel.
Four Democratic senators — Dianne Feinstein (Calif.), Ron Wyden (Ore.), Kamala Harris (Calif.) and Martin Heinrich(N.M.) — are now demanding that the director of national intelligence, Dan Coats, hand over everything.
“Given that Ms. Haspel, as the current Acting Director of the CIA, is in the conflicted position of serving as the classification authority over potentially derogatory information related to her own nomination, we can think of no more appropriate situation for you to serve as the relevant authority,” the lawmakers wrote in a Friday letter.
Democrats have complained that the CIA is selectively declassifying only positive information about Haspel and suggested that continuing to keep her record under wraps violates an Obama-era executive order prohibiting the use of classification to “conceal violations of law, inefficiency, or administrative error” or “prevent embarrassment to a person, organization, or agency.”
