The party of “Grifters, Oligarchs and Polluters” is up to their old tricks – inserting a rotten core into an emergency bill to serve their masters – the wealthiest 1% and large corporations.
In 2020, they snuck a completely unrelated $170 billion tax break into the pandemic relief CARES Act for the benefit of then-President Trump and 43,000 similar wealthy real estate speculators and hedge fund managers, gifting each of them an average of $1.6 million for that year alone.
Now they have split off aid to Israel from Ukraine, refused to provide any humanitarian aid to Palestinian civilians that had been requested by President Biden, and added an unprecedented funding “offset” requirement in an act of political extortion, essentially declaring “We’ll only assist Israel if we can undermine the IRS and help wealthy tax cheats while making the deficit bigger.” $26.8 BILLION DOLLARS BIGGER!
They specifically want to claw back the resources the IRS received under the 2022 Inflation Reduction Act to track down our nation’s wealthiest tax evaders – including at least 1,600 millionaires who owe at least $250,000 and corporations with at least $10 billion in assets. Have their efforts been cost effective? Yes. “the agency pull[s] in $3.18 for each dollar spent auditing the top 1 percent, and $6.29 for the top 0.1 percent.” Mark Mazur, the Biden administration’s former assistant treasury secretary for tax policy. states “This is like if you take a dollar from the IRS and throw a $5 bill out the window.“
Note: Extortion during emergencies is now a GOP feature, not a bug. The GOP is planning to “marry” Ukraine funding with draconian immigration restrictions. Who knows what other partisan issues they will try to force through during emergency conditions?
Act now: Call/email your legislator to publicly call out this terrible bill.
Minimal email/call script for representatives.senators: I’m calling from [zip code] and I want Rep./Sen. [___] to know that we are not falling for the GOP’s extortion. Using an emergency funding bill to stop the IRS from making our nation’s richest tax cheats pay their share is both unprecedented and reprehensible.
Please publicly call out your GOP colleagues and demand that they do their jobs – sending emergency funding where and when it is needed, with no partisan nonsense attached. Demand also that they add humanitarian aid for both Israelis and Palestinians, which is not included in their horrible bill and a requirement for de-escalation and a ceasefire attached to any military aid to Israel.
