Steve “I-was-led-to-believe-I-wasn’t-responsible-for-birth-control” Garvey (R)

There should be a special place in hell for those who encourage long-retired sports figures to run for public office.

Watching Steve speak in the clip below during the primary proved beyond all doubt that he would be, at best, another Tommy Tuberville – an older man used to adulation, but now an elderly rookie way out of his depth and whose ineptitude embarrasses his own party while causing serious damage in his wake.

Steve Garvey, a 75 year-old self-proclaimed “moderate,” will just be another “YES” vote for every bit of Project 2025’s extremist agenda. Like George Santos before him, let Steve go back to making his Cameo videos ($149 a pop!), shaking hands with his fans and lunching with friends.

Dan Schnur, who teaches political communications at USC and UC Berkeley and is a former GOP operative, stated that “he came across as a nonthreatening Republican,” during the debate, which is high praise compared to former state Atty. Gen. Bill Lockyer comment: “Steve Garvey didn’t get to first base. He’s a nice man who’s way over his head both in policy and politics.” But this vague place-holder, who finally admitted he voted for Trump twice, will swear allegiance to him over country, and the interests of the majority of Californians, because, frankly, it looks like he could use the money.

Steve has…well…issues!

“(LATimes) To the editor: As a long-time Dodgers fan, I knew Garvey to have been one of the team’s all-time greatest hitters. But until reading this article, I didn’t know anything about his personal background that might make him a viable candidate for the Senate.

What a coincidence! Garvey evidently shares many qualities that Republicans seem to abide:

  • No prior government experience.
  • A history of cheating on wives and girlfriends, and fathering several kids by multiple romantic partners.
  • Relatives who righteously demean him.
  • Uttering dodgy replies to queries about his dubious qualifications for public office.

If Donald Trump’s manifold legal issues derail his election bid, the GOP could call on Garvey to pinch-hit for the former president.

Sarah S. Williams, Santa Barbara

(politico) Steve can’t even manage his own finances, much less ours. We don’t want any “kitchen table” lectures on budgeting from him.

  • Garvey and his businesses were named in more than 40 tax liens, federal and state, totaling about $3.85 million over the last four decades, according to documents at recorders offices, largely in Los Angeles and Riverside counties.”
  •  According to the Sacramento Bee, Garvey still owes hundreds of thousands of dollars in unpaid federal and state taxes that were incurred in 2011.
  • The $10 million or so that he earned as a player is nowhere to be found.”
  • Garvey tried to organize charity sports events, which he stunk at, to put it politely. “I’ve seen more money raised [for charity] at backyard carnivals,” a former Garvey associate told SI.” He then started autographing baseballs, product endorsements and keynote speeches. He was doing Cameo greetings, like George Santos.
  • In 2006 the Los Angeles Times published a damning report about Garvey’s attempts to live far outside his means, at the expense of others. “The Garveys drove luxury cars, shopped in upscale boutiques and traveled extensively even as they were pursued by creditors. At various points, Garvey allegedly owed money to his gardener, his mirror installer, a caterer, local grocery stores, and his church. He was even sued by his own lawyers.”

Let us not lead him into temptation…

  • Garvey’s already skating close to the edge. (LATimes) “A government watchdog group on Monday requested a federal investigation into Republican Senate candidate Steve Garvey, saying the former Dodgers All-Star broke the law by failing to disclose some of his income last year. Tiffany Muller, the group’s president, said that Garvey’s apparent omissions in his 2023 financial disclosure amount to “deliberately deceiving California voters.”
    • Missing – “required information about paid speeches and meet-and-greet appearances that Garvey—a self-described motivational speaker and prolific autograph signer—didn’t disclose.”
  • Now that legislators can legally get “Thank you” gratuities for services rendered to donors, it’s not a good idea to give a man already so financially compromised temptation to sell his votes to the highest bidder.

Women, we’ve all known guys like Steve...

  • (upi)Former baseball star Steve Garvey: ‘I’ll live up to the moral obligations which I feel strongly about because I am a Christian,’ Garvey told the NBC affiliate. However, the 40-year-old ex-slugger said, ‘In both cases, I was led to believe I wasn’t responsible for birth control.’

Steve can’t even take care of his own family. Why should we expect better?

  • (LATimes) “Steve Garvey touts ‘family values’ in his Senate bid. Some of his kids tell another story: “The 75-year-old has struggled with debt, been repeatedly sued, faced a bitter divorce, and got two women pregnant before quickly marrying a third woman, his current wife, in a scandal that briefly made him a national punchline in 1989. He pledged in interviews at the time to take “moral and financial responsibility” for the childrenHis older daughter stated “There’s something lacking in him, something not authentic,” she said. “To be a man of the people, to truly have experience of being a totally complete, loving family man … I wouldn’t want the people of California to buy into that just because he hit a ball really well.
  • Mendenhall and Young, both 34, told The Times that Garvey declined multiple attempts for meetings or even phone calls. They said they only had a relationship with him through the family court system.
  • They both said they have no partisan or ideological positions on the race — and have moved forward in their lives without their father.

He’s following Project 2025 down the road to destroying your children’s education.

Interesting!

(cahighways.org) “Garvey is the front-runner on the R side, primarily because of the name recognition from his Dodger Days. This is his first time running for office. The front page of his campaign site says little about his positions, but emphasizes his fame and business skills. Hmm, political neophyte, selling himself on fame and business skills. I think we’ve been here before.

Looking at his vision, he seems to be promoting centrist Republican ideals with nary a dogwhistle or coded statement. It all seems carefully tailored to get him that second place position in the California Primary to get Republicans a chance, whereas a MAGA R would turn off the Centrists and make this a Dem vs Dem for the general election. So let’s dig a little deeper. Garvey has supported Trump in the past, but refuses to take a position on support for Trump in 2024. He’s against abortion personally, but doesn’t want Federal legislation on the subject. He has indicated that Reagan was a role model in the past, and he is much like Reagan: Running on fame, broad conservative positions, and very little specifics on the record.

He is also hypocritical. He touts family values and integrity, but he’s also screwed up his family and his kids don’t talk to him. Does that disqualify someone from the Senate? Probably not.

I can see Garvey’s appeal to the centrist Republicans in California. I can also see why the MAGA Republicans are deriding him as a RINO, because he is not explicitly touting MAGA coding and support for Trump. But to me, he is running on fame and platitudes. He doesn’t know the Senate; he doesn’t understand politics. He doesn’t have the right skillset for the Senate. He should stick to baseball, and leave politics to the politicians.
