Federal Candidates – 2024 Primary Election

President of the United States - Vote for (1)

Yeah, Joe is old. Yeah, not every Democratic legislator votes exactly how we want every time. Yeah, the Israel/Gaza conflict has opened up deep divisions. However, our country has a binary party system, and every “statement” vote – for third parties, quixotic also-rans, or worse, not voting at all, opens up opportunity for GOP candidates to win, and an opportunity for Project 2025 to take root.

If we let that happen, even just allowing another GOP-gridlocked Congress, we will look back at this time and wonder why we squandered our chances. So, stick your oar in the water and PULL hard for our ragged, imperfect democracy’s survival!

Joseph R Biden Jr. (D)               INDIVISIBLE

We Indivisibles across the nation obviously support the Biden campaign. For those you know who are easily swayed by partisan civil servants or media hit jobs (NYTimes, we’re looking at you!) or the weird belief that Republicans do better at “economy” (yes, the rich get richer, but 10 of 11 recessions happened on the GOP’s watch), we’re providing some shareable materials, including video and essays.

GOP Presidential Candidates – i.e., the installers of Heritage Foundation’s Project 2025

Still standing…

  • Donald J. Trump
  • Nikki Haley

We aren’t going to waste a lot of time detailing the usual suspects who support GOP candidates. You’ve seen them in the news… Note the lady who thought Trump should be king and those ready and waiting for Trump’s “day” of dictatorship. For goodness sakes, what have we been teaching kids in civics classes for the last 50 years?

The Republican party has devolved into a moving duck blind protecting “Project 2025,” their authoritarian and Christian Nationalist plan to replace democracy, from full view of the public.

With red-state Republicans actively erasing LGBTQ, abortion and voting rights, we can no longer pretend that everything will turn out OK. Trump, Trump keeps spitting out bits of it, like his intention to pursue a cruel and economy-crashing “Largest Domestic Deportation Operation in History,” using, according to Stephen Miller, a private army of National Guard troops from red states and then deploying them into Democratic-run states whose governors refuse to cooperate with their deportation drive.”

“Nice little country you have there. It would be a shame if something happened to it…” Who didn’t think this when he stated that he would encourage his bromance-buddy Putin to overrun democratic countries that didn’t pay their dues to NATO. Besides that being not how NATO is funded, he would breaking American law by violating the NATO treaty.

How much history about our country will we need to forget to accomplish the MAGA-vision?

Instead of letting fascism smother us without protest, tell your legislators to call out the GOP’s Project 2025 as a danger to democracy and specifically get protections from its authoritarian agenda passed! (More actions in process!)

Rep. Katie Porter (D)

(Consumer Federation of California) “After seeking interviews with all three major Democratic candidates the Consumer Federation of California is pleased to endorse Congresswoman Katie Porter for the U.S. Senate,” said Robert Herrell, Executive Director of the Consumer Federation of California (CFC). “Katie Porter is a strong national consumer leader who puts protecting consumers first, ahead of corporate profit. She would be a fantastic member of the United States Senate and serve all Californians and consumers exceptionally well.”

“I’m not a career politician. Before my first election five years ago, I worked as a consumer protection advocate holding greedy corporations accountable for cheating Californians,” said Porter, a consumer protection attorney who was on the front lines of the foreclosure crisis. “I’ve seen firsthand how corporate PAC money buys outcomes in Washington. As the only elected official in this race who’s never taken corporate PAC and refuses lobbyist money, I’m fighting to shake up this status quo and stand up to the corporate special interests that dominate DC. I’m proud to have the Consumer Federation of California by my side.”

Steve Garvey (R) – this 75 year-old self-proclaimed “moderate” is already hinting that he’ll fall in with Project 2025’s extremist agenda.

His candidate statement promised that he wouldn’t be repeating the “same old tired politics.” Hmmm… Watching him speak in the clip below proves he’ll be another Tommy Tuberville, an older man used to adulation, but now way out of his depth, and facing three candidates who are actually smart and capable.

However, it does appear that he’s ready to be part of the GOP’s NEW tiresome politics – swearing allegiance to Trump over country. We’d bet money that he’ll reconcile his own vision to “renew our commitment to our alliances and our role in global leadership” to Trump’s multiple threats to leave NATO by pretending they were just exaggerations.

  • Articles about his children:
    • (upi)Former baseball star Steve Garvey, who was married over…
      • ‘I’ll live up to the moral obligations which I feel strongly about because I am a Christian,’ Garvey told the NBC affiliate. However, the 40-year-old ex-slugger said, ‘In both cases, I was led to believe I wasn’t responsible for birth control.’
    • (LATimes) “Steve Garvey touts ‘family values’ in his Senate bid. Some of his kids tell another story:
      • “The 75-year-old has struggled with debt, been repeatedly sued, faced a bitter divorce, and got two women pregnant before quickly marrying a third woman, his current wife, in a scandal that briefly made him a national punchline in 1989. He pledged in interviews at the time to take “moral and financial responsibility” for the childrenHis older daughter stated “There’s something lacking in him, something not authentic,” she said. “To be a man of the people, to truly have experience of being a totally complete, loving family man … I wouldn’t want the people of California to buy into that just because he hit a ball really well.”
Hmmm…where are the endorsements.

(cahighways.org) “Garvey is the front-runner on the R side, primarily because of the name recognition from his Dodger Days. This is his first time running for office. The front page of his campaign site says little about his positions, but emphasizes his fame and business skills. Hmm, political neophyte, selling himself on fame and business skills. I think we’ve been here before.

Looking at his vision, he seems to be promoting centrist Republican ideals with nary a dogwhistle or coded statement. It all seems carefully tailored to get him that second place position in the California Primary to get Republicans a chance, whereas a MAGA R would turn off the Centrists and make this a Dem vs Dem for the general election. So let’s dig a little deeper. Garvey has supported Trump in the past, but refuses to take a position on support for Trump in 2024. He’s against abortion personally, but doesn’t want Federal legislation on the subject. He has indicated that Reagan was a role model in the past, and he is much like Reagan: Running on fame, broad conservative positions, and very little specifics on the record.

He is also hypocritical. He touts family values and integrity, but he’s also screwed up his family and his kids don’t talk to him. Does that disqualify someone from the Senate? Probably not.

I can see Garvey’s appeal to the centrist Republicans in California. I can also see why the MAGA Republicans are deriding him as a RINO, because he is not explicitly touting MAGA coding and support for Trump. But to me, he is running on fame and platitudes. He doesn’t know the Senate; he doesn’t understand politics. He doesn’t have the right skillset for the Senate. He should stick to baseball, and leave politics to the politicians.

Thomas Cole (R) Holy Hellfire, Batman! Project 2025 has found its true soulmate in this very angry and fearful man.

In a ranty page supporting xenophobia, homophobia, transphobia, book-banning, climate-change denialism, the destruction of public education, the suppression of CRT, accurate history and equity, he’s actually found a way to go further – demanding that single mothers must get married to receive welfare!

Vote-waster: “I am a good and sincere person who could cause a bad candidate to win”

Helen Pasquarella (D)

We agree with some of Helen’s policies, but OMG, this is not the time to split the Democratic vote. Salud, who is not the elite she rails against, but a first-generation immigrant who has done a good job in Congress. Also, there is no way we can leave a path open for the truly heinous Republican candidate, Thomas Cole, to take this office. Instead, we suggest calling our legislators on the great bill by Rep. Barbara Lee that Helen is promoting on her website.

H.R.1111 – Department of Peacebuilding Act of 2023“This bill establishes a Department of Peacebuilding in the executive branch, dedicated to peacebuilding, peacemaking, and the study and promotion of conditions conducive to both domestic and international peace and a culture of peace.

The mission of the department includes the cultivation of peace and peacebuilding as a strategic national policy objective and development of policies that promote national and international conflict prevention, nonviolent intervention, mediation, peaceful conflict resolution, and structured conflict mediation.”

Minimal email script to your representative: I’m calling from [zip code] and I would like [Rep. ___] to cosponsor and support H.R. 1111 – Department of Peacebuilding of 2023. The costs of war have been well studied. It is long past time to study and quantify the benefits of peace domestically and internationally, and as a pathway to preserving our own democracy. (Neither Brownley, nor Carbajal have signed on as cosponsors yet.)

Minimal email script to your senators: I’m calling from [zip code] and I would like [Sen. ___] to sponsor a bill identical to Rep. Barbara Lee’s H.R. 1111 – Department of Peacebuilding of 2023. The costs of war have been well studied. It is long past time to study and quantify the benefits of peace domestically and internationally, and as a pathway to preserving our own democracy.

U.S. Representative – 26th Congressional District – Vote for (1)

Rep. Julia Brownley (D)

Rep. Brownley has been on the right side of most of the issues that matter to her constituents, and is an especially strong supporter of womens’ rights, and veterans’ issues. She passed legislation to expand services for veterans and open a new VA clinic in Ventura County which contains facilities specifically for women veterans. In addition, her legislation to name the new clinic after Captain Rosemary Bryant Mariner was signed by President Biden in Oct. 2022, becoming only the third VA facility named after a woman veteran in the country.

In this video, she describes another project…Let’s help get it over the finish line!

Michael Koslow (R) – Sorry. We already have a veterans and healthcare expert (Rep. Brownley) who won’t help launch Project 2025, unlike you.

A candidate is not required to post every endorsement they receive. When they do, it indicates that they appreciate that support and that it is reciprocal. Besides all the Project 2025-adjacent CA GOP endorsements, Mr. Koslow also posted an a far-right endorsement from out of state – TX congressman Brian Babin. (wiki) He cosponsored a resolution to amend the Constitution to ban same-sex marriage, defended Trump’s verbal insults against Hillary Clinton, and joined in with his fellow insurrection-supportive colleagues to overturn Joe Biden’s victory.

Whatever Mr. Koslow says in the media to appear reasonable, his posted endorsements, (which include Supervisoral District 3 candidate Kelly Long) tell the true story.

U.S. Representative – 32nd Congressional District – Vote for (1)

Rep. Brad Sherman (D)

(cahighways.org) “Brad Sherman has been representing this district (or the neighboring district, as two were merged a few years ago) since 1997. That’s a long time. He serves on three major House Committees. He is a senior member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, a senior member of the House Financial Services Committee, and a member of the House Science, Space and Technology Committee. In 2019, Sherman was elected to serve as Chairman of the House Financial Services Subcommittee on Investor Protection, Entrepreneurship and Capital Markets. He previously served as Chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Asia Subcommittee.

I have generally agreed with his actions in office, and he has been an effective communicator with his constituents. As his campaign page notes, this would be his 14th term (i.e., he’s been in office for over 25 years). That also means he has the seniority (esp. if Democrats are in power) to make a difference. That’s something that wouldn’t be true for a clueless newbie. I agree with him on the issues. So I would need good reason to replace someone I like.”
