The COIN doctrine comes to Portland. By using lawless, anonymous paramilitary forces, Trump and his minions are deliberately creating chaotic photo-ops. Then, like other authoritarians around the world, he can then campaign on a LAW & ORDER platform to his hyper-polarized base, who were beginning to waver due to his inept and lazy handling of the pandemic.

Quote from Billy Porter’s video here on allyship in voting. “We have to play the game that we’re in…We often times as Democrats and liberals have these dreams of what it can be and that is great..but the game that we’re in at this moment – is just getting back to zero.” So go out this weekend – egos down, ally-shields up, and ask people to commit to voting Trump gone on Nov. 3rd.
Doubling up today – the following is a serious message for all of us from Billy Porter. In case you missed the link at the top, here is an additional video from him about equality for EVERYBODY and why it’s critical that we vote.
- Be absolutely sure you are ready to vote.

The Serra statue was quietly removed from in front of our city hall early this morning. He, along with another statue that was inside the building, will be eventually relocated to their new home at the Ventura Mission. Wake up, indeed, America. A war is being waged against us and our 1st amendment rights to protest. But this country was born in revolution against one king’s oppression, and we will rise again.
“Once vigorous measures appear to be the only means left of bringing the Americans to a due submission to the mother country, the colonies will submit.” – King George III
“You have to dominate, and you have to arrest people, and you have to try people and they have to go to jail for long periods of time.” – Trump on a national call to governors.
- Be absolutely sure you are ready to vote.

This is from February, but it’s a good summing up of how far we’ve strayed from “business-as-usual” politics under Trump. Portland is a harsh illustration of our future under his regime – anonymous federal forces engaging in authoritarian repression and extrajudicial kidnappings, – not in some faraway country, but right in our own cities.

Today, a morning of tears…Two incomparable civil rights leaders – John Lewis and C.T. Vivian, passed away yesterday. The lessons these former “freedom riders” left us are as relevant today as they were on “Bloody Sunday” in 1965.
“You must be able and prepared to give until you cannot give any more. We must use our time and our space on this little planet that we call Earth to make a lasting contribution, to leave it a little better than we found it, and now that need is greater than ever before.”
“Do not get lost in a sea of despair,” Lewis tweeted almost exactly a year before his death. “Do not become bitter or hostile. Be hopeful, be optimistic. Never, ever be afraid to make some noise and get in good trouble, necessary trouble. We will find a way to make a way out of no way.” – Rep. John Lewis
