Help voters of color get the ID they need to vote!

Requiring voter ID is a discriminatory barrier to voting. According to the ACLU, “Over 21 million U.S. citizens do not have qualifying government-issued photo identification, and these individuals are disproportionately voters of color.” Even when IDs are free, the documents needed to get an ID are not. Spread the Vote assists people in obtaining IDs.

JOIN OUR POSTCARD BRIGADE!!!

You Can Make a Difference! Do you want to help Democrats win in the 2022 elections?  You can write Get Out The Vote (GOTV) postcards to help get Democratic voters to the polls!  Studies have shown that receiving a colorful postcard with a short punchy message is the most effective way to persuade a voter to get to the polls.

Indivisible Ventura is working with Postcards to Swing States (PSS) to coordinate GOTV postcarding focused on Senate races in swing states.  PSS identifies the campaigns, writes the message, and provides the voter names and addresses. We will provide the cards and, if needed, the stamps.

If you want to participate, please send an email to ivpostcards@gmail.com.  We will add you our writer roster and email you a description of the campaigns we are currently running.  You decide which campaigns you want to join and specify the number of cards you want.  If you live locally, you may collect your supplies from my address in Ventura.  We can also will snail mail your packet to you.

Resist every damn day!

Saturday – 05/21/2022 – CANVASSING IN VTA/SP&Fillmore – “CA: Canvass to Protect Our Drinking Water in Ventura (9:00 am – 12:00 pm PT)

Ventura County residents won big in 2020 when the county’s Board of Supervisors voted to close a loophole that has allowed oil companies to drill through water aquifers without environmental review. So many oil wells in the county have been drilled under this reckless loophole!

But now Big Oil is trying to undo our progress.

Corporations, like Aera Energy, have spent $6.5 million, hired out-of-county petitioners to gather tens of thousands of signatures, and put a referendum measure on the Ventura County ballot this June that could put our drinking water at risk.

We need your support to fight for safe water in Ventura County!

Join us in Ventura to walk neighborhoods and talk to voters about why they should vote YES on A & B this June.

More information and addition actions from Ventura 350.

“Dear 350 Activists,

Some of us are canvasing, knocking on the doors of voters who are likely to vote YES on A & B, but who may well be confused. Here is what we are experiencing. Some people are all in and worried and want to volunteer or put up a sign. Some seem stressed about how to vote. They do not have time or wherewithal to source trustworthy information.

Many we visit are shaken to discover that they could have made a mistake by believing the ads and voting NO. A few appear to feel sick as it gradually sinks in how profoundly they were misled.

Here are answers to questions neighbors in North Ventura Avenue have been asking. We don’t need to know all these facts. But if we can reply with any one of these important counterpoints to the NO campaign lies, it begins to build trust and appreciation:

– There are 5,253 wells like the ones at the end of some of our streets and along the Ventura Bike Trail that were done on antiquated permits with no expiration date. The oil companies can drill new wells next to those old wells, and go deeper, and use more extreme extraction methods by applying to the county for a simple over-the-counter $330 permit, similar to a permit to hang a new business sign. If NO wins, then the current freedom to expand drilling on an old permit will be set in stone with no chance of an environmental review for any new drilling on antiquated permits.

– There are 1,653 wells drilled on modern permits that HAVE had an environmental review. This shows you that environmental review does NOT stop oil drilling. It slows down the application process if the producer wants to expand on a very, very old permit and may curtail some expansion activities for important health and safety reasons.

– The less than 1,000 oil industry employees still have LOTS of work to maintain the total of 8,500 wells in the county. There is also a HUGE amount of new work to properly close abandoned wells. AND requirement for environmental review adds even more really good jobs. Demand for skilled oil production workers has to keep going up as part of a responsible phase-out of oil.

– County revenues are not affected, since existing production is totally unaffected by the ordinance adopted by county supervisors in Nov. Note, the reason there is an A and a B on the ballot is that there are two ordinances required to achieve the health and safety review of new oil drilling, one for the coastal zone and one for the non-coastal zone.

– For those puzzling about the connection to gas prices, this question is easy. First, oil produced in Ventura County is in most cases too thick and low-grade to make gasoline. Oil spokespeople can’t say how much goes to gasoline versus products like asphalt. However, it’s a drop in the bucket of global oil production for gasoline. Some backup estimates: If the overall total is 440,000 barrels daily oil produced in the county and say generously that half (220K barrels) can be used to make gasoline and generously estimate that a third of that could slow down waiting for environmental review before expanding the drilling on an existing antiquated permit. That would be around 75,000 barrels daily that MIGHT go into gasoline that MIGHT experience a slow-down or decrease in production due to environmental review. Global production is 97 MILLION barrels of oil globally per day of oil generally more likely to go into gasoline refineries that Ventura County oil. That amount of slowdown locally will affect maybe around .08% of the global gasoline supply.

– The permitting of new wells on old permits is for protection of those of us who live and work around old wells, and our community that depends increasingly on the protection of the aquifers that they are drilling through.

– Will you please go out and talk to people for the next couple of weeks? Please go to a canvassing training event tomorrow morning at 9 AM. The VC-SAFE Campaign expanded the PDI app so you can operate PDI on the Go in your neighborhood. (https://politicaldata.com/?link_id=1…)

– Go out for an hour whenever you can knocking on the doors of people who need to hear the truth from you.

Also, attend the next Ventura County Board of Supervisors meeting at Government Center, on Tuesday, May 24, to speak for 1-3 minutes in Open Comment about why the ordinances they adopted are significant and what you are doing to help defend them. Sunday – 05/29/2022 – CANVASSING IN VTA/SP&Fillmore – “CA: Canvass to Protect Our Drinking Water in Ventura (9:00 am – 12:00 pm PT)

All canvassing opportunities (dates differ per location)

Sunday – 05/29/2022 – PHONE BANK – ”Voter Protection Phonebanks with Common Cause” (3:00 pm – 5:00 pm PT)

We’re so excited to work together to demand bold changes to our democracy to create a government that represents all of us, not big corporations or special interests. We’ll be calling voters in Florida to connect them to eight state senators and encourage them to vote against anti-voter legislation. We’re also beginning to advocate for No Excuse Absentee Voting in Delaware and recruit poll monitors for the Pennsylvania primary. These phonebanks are subject to change based on variables outside of our control (i.e. a Senator’s mailbox is full)

See the daily schedule at the link below (See link below for daily schedule):

Sunday: Calling Pennsylvania voters to recruit them to be poll monitors in the upcoming Pennsylvania primary.

These shifts also always will include training for first-timers before you make calls – so if this is your first time, no worries! We’ll make sure you feel prepared before you begin.

Sunday – 06/12/2022 – PHONE BANK – “Adopt-A-Traitor Phone Bank – CA-27 (formerly CA-25)” (3:00 pm – 5:00 pm PT)

Join Field Team 6 in calling eligible voters (likely Dems) in Californa’s 27th district! (Formerly CA-25!) You’ll be targeting Mike Garcia, a traitorous Republican who voted to overturn the Biden election results.

You’ll be reaching out to get people registered as Democrats, or signed up to vote from home (vote by mail) if they’re already registered.

Making sure people are registered to vote, and that they can vote safely from home, is a super-effective way to make a difference. In 2022, we can flip this seat back to a Democrat.

But we need your help. Join us as we turn voices into votes! All training provided!

We are asking people to form or join teams and commit to raising $2000 to be donated to pre-existing organizations through a grant process to help the homeless. Our goal is to raise $40,000 with the event through people like you and community donors.

You can help by forming your own team, attending the event or a team fundraiser, or by making a donation to my Team.  My Team is Team Family First!

Attached is more information about Sleep Out and a link to an Instagram live Our Entertainment Chair posted with information about the event. Please reach out to me if you have any additional questions.

Guided Phone Bank to Texas organized by Center for Common Ground

In 2021, the Texas legislature introduced a slew of voter-suppression bills targeted especially at communities of color.

To fight back, we are calling Black voters in Texas 65 and older, and encouraging them to take advantage of voting by mail, which is still available as a no-excuse option for that age.

Beginning phone banker? We start with a training for anyone who needs it. You can also train yourself beforehand by watching this video. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wEdetfpnt_I)

Experienced? You can start making these calls immediately and pop back into the zoom with any questions along the way.

You can also make these calls on your own time 9am-8pm within the target state’s time zone – no need to wait for an event!

For more information about this phone bank, please visit the CFCG Phonebank Page

ANYTIME – ONLINE PETITION – “Expel Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene from Congress, now!

This petition campaign, created by Robert Reich, has already garnered over 103,000 signatures and is now on the media radar. Push it on, folks!

There is no place in Congress for Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, who most recently made an abhorrent comment comparing the mask mandate in the U.S House to the Nazi extermination program of Jewish people during the Holocaust. There is no place in Congress for her racism, Islamophobia, antisemitism, conspiracy theories, and attacks against survivors of gun violence. There is no place in any workplace, much less the halls of Congress, for those who harass, intimidate, and spew hate at their colleagues….” (Oh, RR fans…he is just getting warmed up!) (From Jessica Craven) “OK. We know that across the country, democracy and voting rights are under attack.

First sign a petition: We also know that a whole bunch of businesses said they would speak up to protect our fundamental right as Americans, but there’s one problem: they’re still members of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, a group with a long history of fueling anti-democratic actions. You can read all about it here, (https://dropthechamber.org). Then sign a petition asking these companies to DROP the Chamber of Commerce.

Then do this: Go to this form, (https://www.notion.so/Tell-These-Big-Corps-to-Drop-the-US-Chamber-of-Commerce-5c60c8ccf4c14fabafb87fa70854c767) where you can click each purple link to auto-populate an email to CEOs at a major company. The “digital divide” in broadband coverage is a form of racial injustice. The FCC is asking for help to find the blind spots. Share!

We’ve all seen the photos of kids sitting in parking lots outside coffee shops, doing their homework, because their home doesn’t have internet access. (GRI) “Just less than half of households with annual family incomes less than $20,000 have home-internet access. Further, 83% of Asians and 81% of Whites have home-internet access, compared to 72% of American Indian/Alaska Natives, 70% of Hispanics, 68% of Blacks. Largely a product of America’s overall racial wealth gap, the “digital divide” is a term that has come to describe the racial and economic disparities seen in internet access for Americans.”
Articles:

(the Verve)“…The form the FCC is using for your responses (https://consumercomplaints.fcc.gov/hc/en-us/requests/new?ticket_form_id=360001440131) is decidedly rudimentary; it looks like a general complaint form, and doesn’t ask any specific questions about broadband at all (the only reference is in the header). But the FCC says it’s a stopgap on the path to a more detailed and specific reporting tool. For now, perhaps you can take a look at the FCC’s current crappy maps at your address, and tell the FCC whether you actually have the kinds of choices that the ISPs claim you have.

Postcards for DC Statehood!

Washington D.C. is a living, breathing, racial and civil rights injustice and we need to fix it!

Update: A Heritage Foundation lawyer, Zack Smith, actually stated out loud that DC residents “already impact the national debate” because members of Congress see their yard signs while driving to work. (Note – yard signs imply property ownership, so thanks, Heritage Foundation for that slap-back to the beginnings of our country, when only property owners got to vote.)

Go here for get postcards! A member has printed up a large amount. This is an easy task, both sides are already printed, ready for addressing and stamps! Instructions included.

If you’re unfamiliar with the hundreds of years that DC residents have been denied statehood, along with the rights we take for granted, like representation along with taxation, the ability to make laws without federal interference, and being able to call up the National Guard when they need it, here’s our post with lots of information and great videos. (Also 51 for 51 and DCstatehoodcoalition.org ) Both the House and Senate have reintroduced bills to fix this, H.R.51 & S.51 “WashingtonD.C. Admission Act. Another important bill –  H.R.1 – “For the People Act, declares, amongst many important voting reforms, “…that DC residents deserve full Congressional voting rights and self-government, which only statehood can provide.” (full text) (endorsements). We need to get all Democratic representatives and senators onboard both bills as cosponsors quickly as possible!

Letter Template – “Biden: Commit to close the #FirstTen immigrant detention centers!”

Letter Template here. For the last four years, immigrant communities have experienced Trump’s never-ending racist and xenophobic attacks, including a massive expansion of the immigration detention system. As President Biden begins to undo these harms, he must prioritize dismantling the cruel immigration detention system that deprives the liberty of thousands of immigrants and people seeking asylum each year.

Join Detention Watch Network, in collaboration with communities across the country, as we demand that the Biden administration fulfill its commitment to restoring humanity to the immigration system by recognizing that detention has no place in a just and humane system. People navigating their immigration cases should be able to do so in community, not behind bars in detention. We call on the Biden administration to take bold action towards ending the use of detention entirely by shutting down and ending contracts for the following ten detention centers that are emblematic of how the immigration detention system as a whole is inherently abusive, unjust, and fatally flawed beyond repair.

  1. Adelanto Detention Facility
  2. Berks County Family Residential Center
  3. South Texas Family Residential Center (Dilley)
  4. Etowah County Jail
  5. Farmville Detention Center
  6. T. Don Hutto Residential Facility (Hutto)
  7. Irwin County Detention Center
  8. Karnes County Family Residential Center
  9. Mesa Verde Detention Center
  10. Otero County Processing Center

The facilities on this list represent every facility across the country where medical neglect is common, physical and sexual abuse are widely reported, basic necessities are lacking, food is rotten, access to counsel and support is restricted, and immigrants needlessly suffer. This list provides a roadmap, a #FirstTen to communities not cages.

SEND a letter to President Biden and DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas and demand that he CLOSES the #FirstTen immigrant detention centers as a first step to abolish immigrant detention. #CommunitiesNotCages

ACLU – How do we End Racism in Policing?

The ACLU has changed it’s mind! Instead of focusing on making police departments better, they are now firmly on the side of divesting functions, power and responsibilities from police departments and tranferring them to life-giving non-police-dependent alternatives. This video covers qualified immunity, police union influence, and use of force standards, as well as the big questions on how we can stop police from being such an outsized presence in Black communities. One example of redirection – the changeover from police transport of medical emergencies to ambulances, which took place in the 1960’s. Share all these resources with your friends and family, along with the ACLU’s series of short videos called “100 Years of Racism in Policing.

Thurs 12/17: Carbon neutrality by 2045? CA has to move faster!

Full post here. Governor, 80 groups have asked you, based on science, to speed up our clean car mandate to meet state climate goals and the communities most harmed by fossils fuel pollution shouldn’t have to wait an extra five years to breathe clean air. I urge you to direct the CA Air Resources Board (CARB) to:

  1. Require 100% zero-emission vehicle sales by 2030 and a minimum 7% decrease in emissions each year from petroleum cars in the meantime.
  2. Create good jobs and ensure low-income communities of color benefit equitably from the transition.
  3. Start new clean car standards as soon as possible, no later than model year 2024.

In 1939, a ship, the St. Louis, came to our shores seeking asylum for 900 Jewish passengers fleeing their increasingly dangerous homeland. Shamefully, we turned them away and hundreds died upon their return. 80 years later, we need to demand better for those who seek safety here.

Fight fossil fuel political dominance by reducing the need for it!

Ventura County is developing a 100-megawatt, 400-megawatt hour battery storage facility to replace the need for new natural gas-powered generation. So far, Ojai is the first and only city in our county who’s made a jump to gas source reduction with an all-electrica building code, though there are still discussions as to the extent of their ordinance.

Cities and counties in California serve as guiding lights as the state navigates a transition from gas to clean-energy buildings. Motivated by the climate crisis, worsening air pollution, escalating gas rates, and safety risks from gas, a new cohort of local government leaders is emerging in California. Over 50 cities and counties across the state are considering policies to support all-electric new construction.

This blog summarizes the cities and counties that have already adopted gas-free buildings commitments or electrification building codes (i.e., “reach codes” that go beyond the statewide building code) and is regularly updated to reflect the latest wins in California. Ordinance language is also linked below.

To urge your city council members to be climate leaders and to create a gas-free future for our homes and buildings, please sign this petition.

Top 13 things you should know about our postal service! It is the leading employer of minorities (39%) and women (40%), and for three years in a row they were in Hispanic Business magazine’s annual “Diversity Elite 60” list of best companies for Hispanics, the only federal agency on the list. The USPS is also one of the largest employers of veterans, with more than 97,000.

CALL/Email Action!: Urge your legislators to vote “YES” on the “Breathe Act”

Bill summery here:For decades, the federal government has incentivized mass criminalization through policies and funding programs that increase arrests, prison construction, hiring of police officers, and the militarization of police.  This funding has fueled the violent over-policing of Black people, while leaving social services and basic infrastructure that actually keep people safe woefully underfunded. The BREATHE Act proposes policy and funding that upends this violent reality. Policy is one of many tools at our disposal, and with this bill, we are creating a national standard of civil rights that will bring our demands into reality. We are not interested in someone else’s version of what is politically possible. We are interested in defending Black lives.” The bill doesn’t appear to have a number yet. Articles about it here and here.
