Join in the boycott of Goya Foods!

Yesterday, CEO Robert Unanue of Goya Food, which bills itself as the country’s largest Hispanic-owned food company, praised President Donald Trump during a visit to the White House. This comes as a huge disappointment to the majority of Latinos a who point out that Trumps continuously attacks their community.

For those who would give him a pass because of the company’s food donations,  David Callihan, in his 2018 article on the failure of philanthropy to produce systemic change, wrote: “Foundations like Ford and Rockefeller were focused on “nurturing saplings while the forest is being clear-cut.” While Goya is handing out cans of beans to food banks, Trump is making sure that more people need to use them. He is clear-cutting civil rights, safety nets, including the right to adequate food, and the right to a safe environment, and Goya is right with him, helping him aim the chainsaw.

Here’s a petition from United We Dream, an immigrant youth-led organization who has stated that they won’t supportcompanies who endorse and comply with a White Supremacist regime.

Here is a twitter thread for the recipes to replace Goya’s products.

UPDATE: This cruelty has been rescinded. Call your legislators! – Allow F-1 and M-1 students to remain in the US with online-only classes

klhmEfOKhOYEEdl-800x450-noPad.jpg

The Trump administration on Tuesday rescinded a policy that would have stripped visas from international students whose courses move exclusively online amid the coronavirus pandemic.”

We’re not assuming that Trump, like the Tin Man, has suddenly acquired a heart. We suspect that the Koch collective, the network of oligarchs who are taking over our country, just reminded him that this action, like throwing DACA recipients out of the country, is just bad for business.

Call your legislators about the ICE “Citizen Academy” boondoggle.

Instead of prioritizing funding to keep USCIS workers on the job to process immigration applications, they will suffer a mandatory minimum 30-day furlough, while the policing arm – (ICE), is wasting taxpayer dollars on creating a public relations boondoggle in Chicago, a sanctuary city.

A prototype for a nationwide roll-out, the Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO) Chicago Citizens Academy was advertised with a city-wide mailing campaign. Ald. Rossan Rodriquez, 33rd Ward stated that she was concerned about the language in the letter, which reads, in part, “attendees will participate in scenario-based training and exercises conducted in a safe and positive environment, including, but not limited to defensive tactics, firearms familiarization, and targeted arrests.” “What it sounds like to me is a vigilante academy,”

Chicago Congressman Jesús ‘Chuy’ García said he was disturbed by the program, which he fears will lead to racial profiling, surveillance and potential violence. Congress was not informed of this potentially nation-wide program and he only learned of it through social media.  The six-week course, García said, appeared to be “inviting people to become an extension of ICE… to possibly surveil their neighbors who might be undocumented.” He also feared that the invitation might appeal to “right-wing individuals who might like the vigilante lifestyle,” which could lead to potential violence.

Tell your legislators that we are fed up with militarized police and arrests of peaceful people and we don’t want our money wasted in useless and false explanations. A public relations coup for ICE would be to comply with the June 26 order by US District Judge Dolly Gee to let children out of COVID-infested detention centers, along with their parents, complying with all known studies of the trauma incurred by family separation.

Minimal script: I’m calling from [zip code] and I want Rep./Sen. [___] to immediately withdraw funds from ICE for their surprise “citizen academies.” If there’s money rattling around for extracurricular activities such as this, it needs to funneled back to real work – USCIS workers processing immigration applications.

Make discriminatory 911 Calls in CA a hate crime – “YES” on AB1550

image.png

Rob Bonta Please join with me to stop discriminatory 911 Calls in California! AB1550 will provide justice for victims and impose accountability on 911 callers motivated by an individual’s race, religion, sex, or any other protected class by designating such calls as hate crimes.

“The intent of AB 1550 is not to discourage individuals who are facing real danger or who seek to report a crime in good faith from calling 911. Instead, this bill could protect millions of Californians from becoming targets of hate and prevent the weaponization of our law enforcement against communities of color.”

The bill has passed the Assembly (Limón and Irwin voted ‘YES.” See all votes here.) It has now been re-referred to the CA Senate Committee on Public Safety, of which our Senator Hannah-Beth Jackson is a member.

Minimal script for senators: I’m calling from [zip code] and I want state senator [___] to vote “YES” on AB 1550 – Stop Discriminatory 911 Calls in CA.

Call your Senators and demand they cosponsor S.631 – Washington DC Admission Act  – ADD-ON – “What’s the hold-up on the HEROES Act?”

Watch this video first!

HR 51/S.631are bills that reaffirm American democracy’s promise that ALL people have a say in our federal government by extending that right to the last group of people have been denied it. 700,000 Americans who live in the District of Columbia lack a voting representative in the House and have no representation in the Senate at all, despite the fact that they pay federal income taxes, serve in the military and sit on federal juries..

Note to Rep. Mo Brooks (R-AL): There is no direct comparison in the nonsense you speak. Jefferson County, Alabama already has both a voting House member and 2 senators to represent their interests. That DC’s population is treated as a stateless city is what is “nuts.” Please find a 5th grader to explain this to you.

However, his rant reminds us that racist politicians have prevented D.C. from becoming a state to prevent D.C.’s Black residents, who comprise just under half the popultion, from building political power. If D.C. is granted statehood, it will be the only state in the nation to have a plurality of Black residents. HR 51 passed in the House, the first time in history. Now we need the Senate to do it’s job.

Senator-check here: Both Feinstein and Harris are supporters. Ask your friends in Red states to call their senators and tell them to do the right thing.

Send some postcards to ICE! – Stop these crimes against humanity now.

This past Friday, Federal Judge Molly Gee ordered ICE (Immigration Customs Enforcement) to, release families by July 17th who are being held in US Immigration Detention Centers as they try to seek asylum in the US. The judge knows that COVID is spreading in these centers.  These families need to absolutely be released together now so they can go to their sponsors or families. The science is clear that separating children from their parents has long-term damaging psychological and health consequences for the children. For those who keep insisting on saying “All lives matter,”it’s time to step up and stop our own government from hurting children.

Send your postcards to the following ICE Authorities to let them know that there is community support for released families and to help ensure they appear for their immigration hearings.  Let’s as them to do the right thing and keep these families together.

Call your senators and demand vote “NO” on S.4049 – the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA).

This video came out in 2008. The economic costs described here were horrifying, but the 2020 update is even more so. What if a fraction of this money spent on death and destruction was used for developing green industries and jobs, universal health care, equitable housing and education?

This  year’s GOP version –  S.4049 – the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), continues to increase the military budget, renews the 1033 program which militarizes local police forces with cast-off combat equipment, fails to do anything effective to bring to an end our endless-wars, fails to hold the Pentagon accountable for how it spends or wastes our tax-dollars, and ignores the climate crisis that alarms our military professionals. This is a “must pass” bill, and as such, our senators have the power to fight for something better. Much, much better. We need an NDAA that cuts defense spending, addresses climate change with the urgency it deserves, ends police militarization, adds accountability to stimulus spending, and more.Minimal script: I’m calling from [zip code] and I want to  Senator [___] to vote”No” on S.4049 – the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) until it cuts defense spending, addresses climate change with the urgency it deserves, ends police militarization, adds accountability to stimulus spending, and more.

Call your legislators and ask them what they are going to do about this.

Here’s the original story from the New York Times.

Members of Congress in both parties demanded answers today about reported bounties paid by Russian operatives to Afghan insurgents for killing American troops. The crucial intelligence that bounties might be occurring came from the recovery of a large amount of American cash from a raid on a Taliban outpost. Twenty-six NATO coalition members were killed in Afghanistan in 2019, and NATO officials were briefed a week ago on the issue.

If the reporting on the story is correct, the information reached the Oval Office in March, where “Officials developed a menu of potential options — starting with making a diplomatic complaint to Moscow and a demand that it stop, along with an escalating series of sanctions and other possible responses, but the White House has yet to authorize any step, the officials said.…”the menu of potential options” went ignored, and Trump proceeded to take steps to boost the Kremlin’s agenda — including endorsing Russia’s re-entry into the G-7 and vowing to remove U.S. troops from Germany.

Three scenarios exist:

  • (1) Trump was informed about the bounty scheme but did nothing;
  • (2) Trump was kept in the dark by his own administration’s intelligence officials; or
  • (3) Trump was handed critically important national-security information, but he didn’t bother to read it.”

Any of these scenarios could demonstrate that not only is Trump unfit for office, but an actual danger to our country.

Minimal script: I’m from [zip code] and I’m calling Sen/Rep [___] to support their efforts in thoroughly investigating Trump’s role in the Putin-bounty-hunting story.

Rent is due on July 1st, and millions won’t be able to pay. Pass “HR 7301” Emergency Housing Protections and Relief Act of 2020″

National-Low-Income-Housing-Coalition.jpg

The National Low Income Housing Coalition (NLIHC) is dedicated solely to achieving socially just public policy that ensures that people with the lowest income have affordable and decent homes.

The House has already passed the HEROES Act and they  will as soon as Monday, June 29 – on Rep. Maxine Water’s H.R. 7301, the “Emergency Housing Protections and Relief Act of 2020″ – a package of critically needed emergency housing resources and protections to help keep renters in their homes and to address the health and safety of people experiencing homelessness. The bill includes the housing and homelessness resources approved by the House in the HEROES Act, including NLIHC’s top priorities: $100 billion in emergency rental assistance; a national, uniform moratorium on evictions and foreclosures; $11.5 billion to prevent and respond to outbreaks among people experiencing homelessness; and additional needed resources to ensure housing stability.

  • NLIHC’s priorities for the next COVID-relief package here.
  • Housing provisions in the HEROES Act and H.R. 7301 here.

Minimal script for reps: I’m calling from [zip code] and I want Rep . [___] to vote “YES” on H.R. 7301 – the “Emergency Housing Protections and Relief Act of 2020″.

Minimal script for senators: I’m calling from [zip code] and I want Sen.[___] to tell Mitch to take a break from installing racist judges, and start passing legislation to help regular Americans, like H.R. 7301, the “Emergency Housing Protections and Relief Act of 2020,”  to keep millions  from becoming homeless.

More script if you want it: Our country has a huge amount of wealth, but we can’t count ourselves great until every person has affordable and decent housing to live and raise a family.

Rep-check is easy – zero, so roust your reps (Brownley or Carbajal) and get them onboard. Call both senators.

Send a letter to your Senators today demanding a nationwide moratorium on water shutoffs.

image.png

It’s easy, thanks to Food & Water Action. Click here.

From the beginning of our national health crisis, Food & Water Action has been fighting water shutoffs. And with your help, we’ve stopped water service shutoffs across the country — in states like New York and Oregon — for 63% of the U.S. population, protecting about 206 million people.

But unfortunately, these actions are just temporary. At least three statewide and 41 local water moratoria have already expired. This means that more than 12 million people have lost the protections we helped win. Many more moratoria are slated to lapse in the next month.Water shutoffs aren’t only an issue of public health, they’re also an issue of racial and environmental justice. The highest shutoff rates occur in low-income communities and communities of color.

According to new research, water rates have increased by an average of 80% since 2010 with two-in-five households struggling to pay for water, leaving millions of Americans with unaffordable water bills. We’ve also found that Black communities face some of the most unaffordable water bills in the country. Households that had their water shut off during the pandemic were already struggling to make ends meet.

Longstanding racial inequities are allowing COVID-19 to sicken and kill Black and Indigenous people in wildly disproportionate numbers. The pandemic, together with the urgent demand for social, racial and environmental justice, has made it clear: Withholding water costs lives.

That’s why we need a nationwide moratorium on water shutoffs now. Public health depends on access to water, to keep ourselves and our communities safe. Congress needs to take action.”

Call your legislators to make one’s right to protest safe from chemical warfare.”

YES” on H.R. 7221 – “To prohibit law enforcement officers from using chemical weapons in the course of policing activities, and for other purposes.

As people across the U.S. protest systemic racism and police violence against Black people, police are using tear gas, a chemical weapon that is banned in warfare, as a means of crowd control. The aerosolized chemical is not only damaging to the human body in its own right, but even more so as we face a pandemic that is attacking people’s respiratory systems. The gas also seeps into nearby homes where it contaminates food, furniture, skin and surfaces, and can cause long-term lung damage. A 2012 Army study found that volunteers exposed to the gas had a substantially higher risk of contracting an acute respiratory illness days after the exposure compared to the same period before. The risk increased the more people were exposed and a Turkish study of the long-term effects of tear gas included chronic bronchitis. Our own CDC added long-term effects to eyes and asthma.

Add this into the existing respiratory issues minority population already suffer from environmental racism, fighting BLM protesters with a weapon that focuses on breathing itself is particularly heinous.

Minimal script: I’m calling from [zip code] and I want Rep/Sen. to cosponsor and actively support H.R. 7221 – “To prohibit law enforcement officers from using chemical weapons in the course of policing activities.”

More script if you want it: Many of your constituents are actively pursuing their first amendment rights to protest racial inequality at every level of government, and we expect that our legislators will take every possible action to protect them.

Call your legislators to enact the planks of the Poor People’s Campaign

While ±6,500 Trump supporters yelled and yawned in Tulsa, more that a million people tuned in to view the Poor People’s digital protest. “According to organizers, the three and a half hour event was “the largest digital and social media gathering of poor and low-wealth people, moral and religious leaders, advocates, and people of conscience in this nation’s history.” Read about it here. You can watch the whole presentation here. Campaign co-chair Rev. Dr. William J. Barber II gave specific examples of needed resource shifts, drawing from a more detailed Moral Budget produced last year with the Institute for Policy Studies. Tell your legislators that this is what we want and need.

Minimal script: I’m calling from [zip code] and I want Rep/Sen. to shift resources to reprioritize national resources to elevate human needs over enriching the wealthy and expanding the military. Specifically:

  • Free up resources for social and green energy investments by cutting $350 billion from the military budget and saving $179 billion by ending mass incarceration and another $24 billion by abandoning the border wall
  • Restore the corporate tax rate to pre-2018 levels, generating enough to fund universal early learning and childcare support
  • Introduce a tiny tax on Wall Street trades to cover the cost of free public college
  • Impose a wealth tax and inheritance taxes to pay for public infrastructure repair and a “baby bonds” program to narrow the racial wealth gap

#Juneteenth – No more Excuses – Time to make Juneteenth a nation holiday. “YES” on HR 7232!

Read about Juneteenth here: VC StarForbes, VOXCNN, AJC, bittersoutherner and yougov, the original “Juneteenth” order, why schools didn’t teach about Juneteeth in history class and why it matters.

Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee, (D-TX-18) has proposed H.R. 40 and Cory Booker has proposed the matching S.1083 in the Senate, to “address the fundamental injustice, cruelty, brutality, and inhumanity of slavery in the United States and the 13 American colonies between 1619 and 1865 and to establish a commission to study and consider a national apology and proposal for reparations for the institution of slavery, its subsequent de jure and de facto racial and economic discrimination against African-Americans, and the impact of these forces on living African-Americans, to make recommendations to the Congress on appropriate remedies” (Cosponsors of HR 40  here. Carbajal has signed on, Brownley has NOT.  ) (Cosponsors of S.1083 here  – Harris has signed, Feinstein has NOT)

The Movement for Black Lives has published a list of issues and resources on this subject, including this “toolkit” and a cultural “one-pager” full of linked references.

Minimal Script: I’m calling from [zip code] and I want Rep./Sen. [___] to know that it is long past time for the US government to formally make amends for the injustice of slavery and we want [him/her] to fully support (Rep.-HR 40)/ (Sen. – S.1083.)

PETITION ACTION for Juneteenth federal Holiday

Juneteenth has been recognized by 46 states and the District of Columbia as a holiday or observance. Virginia’s Governor Ralph Northam just declared Juneteenth a state holiday. Many companies, including Nike, Twitter and Square, are making it a paid holiday.

Every year, Congress passes resolutions “recognizing June 19 [fill in the year] as an observance of historical significance.” It’s long past time to add “Juneteenth – Emancipation Day” to the list of federal holidays and to be added to the list of national observances. (which includes things like “National Safe Boating Week,” for goodness sakes).
