Wednesday– 10/27/2021 – WORKSHOP CALL – ”Indivisible – Truth Brigade Campaign Launch Calls & Office Hours” (3:30pm PDT)

(Small Deeds Done) “So, the Indivisible Truth Brigade is pretty brilliant: Propaganda, false characterizations, intentionally misleading messages, and outright lies threaten our democracy and even our lives. We can effectively combat disinformation, despite the well-funded machines that drive it. They may have money, but we have truth and we have people. People believe sources they trust. When we share and amplify unified, factual messages to those who trust us, we shift the narrative. When we do this by the thousands–we’re part of the Indivisible Truth Brigade, and we get our country back. Join us.“On the fourth Wednesday of every month, join their workshop call for new member orientation, existing member “ask me anything!” discussions with staff and disinformation-fighting pros, message workshopping support and–maybe most important–connecting with a community of people who care as much as you do about rebuilding a society based on truth and trust. Also: new Truth Brigade campaigns launched and explained; questions answered.This Wednesday they’ll be discussing Vaccine Mandates and defending them. This is a great idea, and a great way to promote improved, consistent, messaging across a number of platforms. Wednesday – 10/27/2021 – ONLINE– ”Phone Bank for the Virginia House of Delegates” (3:00 pm – 5:00 pm PDT)

The battle for control of the Virginia House of Delegates will be hotly contested this November. Since Democrats gained control of the chamber in 2019, they have passed transformative legislation making Virginia a progressive outlier in the South. From abolishing the death penalty, raising the minimum wage, and expanding voting rights, Virginia’s Democratic Trifecta have proven that they’re effective and successful at governing. This fall, we must defend the Governorship and House of Delegates in order to maintain Democratic control over the state.

That’s why we’re phone banking every Friday, Sunday, Monday and Wednesday through Election Day to #DefendTheBlue in Virginia! Join us as we phone bank into key House of Delegates districts to defend Virginia’s Democratic Trifecta.

Thursday – 10/28/2021 – ONLINE – “Join Joan’s Democracy Cafe to phone bank Democrats for Virginia Election with the DNC” (12:00pm – 3:00pm PDT)

Join Joan’s Democracy Café every Tuesday and Thursday afternoon as we phone-bank with the DNC (Democratic National Committee) to Get Out the Vote for Democrats in Virginia, for the November 2nd election. Virginia is a Blue state, but the opinion polls show a close race. Electing Terry McAuliffe as Governor will not be enough. Voters need to elect Hala Ayala as Lt. Governor and Mark Herring as Attorney General. Plus, voters need to fill the Virginia House of Delegates with Democrats, to shore up this important Blue state. Since the Virginia state-wide election is the first regular election in a purple state after the presidential election, it is always considered a bellwether for the midterm election. Without a win all around, Virginia may not be able to hold back the surge of far-right, anti-democratic policies advocated by Republicans in Virginia. A loss in Virginia bodes ill for 2024; Virginia has been a Democratic outlier in the South, and is critically important for our nation. Let’s get out the Blue vote in Virginia.

We’ll train first-timers before you make calls – no worries! We’ll make sure you feel prepared before you begin, and remain available to answer your questions.

Our goal is to provide a great phone-banking experience for you … supporting our volunteers in becoming motivated and confident callers.

We are always open to your feedback, as we believe in continuous improvement. Your input helps us to design the JDC phone-banking experience to meet the needs of both our phone bankers and the voters we reach out to.

Friday – 10/29/2021 – SANTA MONICA– “Global Day of Action on the eve of the Glasgow Climate Summit – “Stop Setting Our World on Fire!” (3:00 pm PDT) Tongva Park, Santa Monica, 1615 Ocean Avenue

On Friday, October 29th, youth climate activists and their adult allies are taking to the streets in the thousands across the country to demand an end to the funding of climate chaos. We are part of an intergenerational and intersectional coalition of more than 200 movement partners.

We join the FUTURE COALITION this Friday in Santa Monica at 3 pm.

And of course, as the calendar suggests, the event is called Climate Halloween because nothing is scarier than the Climate Emergency!

3:00 assemble at Tongva Park — don’t be surprised if you see folks costumed as endangered species.

3:30 march begins — parading through Downtown Santa Monica, the Third Street Promenade, landing in front of Chase Bank (the world’s largest funder of climate chaos) on 4th Street for a rally featuring speeches and performances.

Friday – 10/29/2021 – ONLINE POSTCARD EVENT– ”Post Cards to High Potential Native Voters” (9:00 am PDT)

In 2020 volunteers for the Northeast Arizona Native Democrats sent over 18,000 postcards to voters on the Navajo, Hopi and White Mountain Apache Nations. That means you and your fellow volunteers sent postcards to EVERY Permanent Early Voting List (PEVL) voter, explaining to them how to make sure their vote counted. Their work paid off! We had a 300% increase in mail in ballots in 2020 over 2016 but only a tiny increase in ballots that needed corrections. We know this project increased the number of votes counted on tribal land and extended Biden’s victory in Arizona.

This week we are launching our Fall 2021 postcard campaign to keep up the momentum and nurture the commitment Democrats made to Native voters. As we gear up for the 2022 midterm elections, we want to make sure we are engaging Native voters throughout the election cycle to keep them informed and involved. That’s why our program works with our communities year-round, not just when we are asking for votes.

In 2022, Arizonans will defend Mark Kelly’s Senate seat, as well as Tom O’Halleran’s Congressional District 1 seat. Plus, nearly all of our statewide races are on the ballot, including the governor. This election is just as consequential as the 2020 General Election to protect our Congressional majority and to fight the extremists in our state.

Please sign up to get a list of 25 voter addresses and a script to help make sure all 22,000 of our High Potential voters hear from us. This volunteer effort allows us to keep our funds in the field and increase the number of organizers we can have on the ground. We now have six full time Native field organizers: you help make that possible with these cards to voters!

Sunday – 10/31/2021 – ONLINE– ”Phone Bank for the Virginia House of Delegates” (11:00 am – 1:00 pm PDT)

Sunday – 10/31/2021 – ONLINE PHONEBANK – ”Field Team 6 – Adopt-a-Traitor Phone Bank – CA-25! (2:00 pm – 4:00pm PDT)

Join Field Team 6 in calling eligible voters (likely Dems) in Californa’s 25th district!

You’ll be targeting Mike Garcia, a traitorous Republican who voted to overturn the Biden election results.

You’ll be reaching out to get people registered as Democrats, or signed up to vote from home (vote by mail) if they’re already registered.

Making sure people are registered to vote, and that they can vote safely from home, is a super-effective way to make a difference. In 2022, we can flip this seat back to a Democrat.

ANYTIME – GOTV -“Get out the vote” ACTIVITIES

ANYTIME– LETTERS – ”Writing bilingual letters in English and Spanish” (even if you can’t speak Spanish!)

Thank you for your interest in our 2021 bilingual English/Spanish letter experiment! We’re thrilled to be running this Vote Forward Labs experimental campaign with our friends at Voto Latino.

The 2021 experiment: In late 2020, our pilot bilingual letter experiment for the U.S. Senate runoff elections in Georgia appeared to substantially increase voter turnout among the voters assigned to receive bilingual letters. That was a pretty small test though! With this larger randomized experiment, we’re attempting to determine the impact of bilingual letters on voter turnout in the Atlanta and Miami mayoral elections on November 2.

For each city, we have a control group, a group set to receive standard “please vote” letters in English, and a group set to receive bilingual English/Spanish “please vote” letters. In both Florida and Georgia, voters self-identify their race/ethnicity when they register, so we’ll be using this information to target voters who self-identified as Hispanic on their voter registration, and who we believe are likely to support Democratic candidates based on their partisanship scores.

Everyone can participate: Volunteers do not need to be fluent in Spanish to participate in this experimental campaign. To make it more accessible, we collected messages that many volunteers already add to their letters and crafted Spanish translations for them. These messages are listed below. If you cannot write your “I vote because” message in both English and Spanish, we hope you will select a message from Vote Forward’s English/Spanish Message Library to use on these letters. Volunteers also have the option of reaching out to someone who is fluent in Spanish to translate a different message.

Tuesday – 11/02/2021 – ONLINE – “Join Joan’s Democracy Cafe to phone bank Democrats for Virginia Election with the DNC” (12:00pm – 3:00pm PDT)

Friday – 11/05/2021 – ONLINE POSTCARD EVENT– ”Post Cards to High Potential Native Voters” (9:00 am PDT)

A biologist is invited to set up a wildlife observation station full of binoculars for you to borrow and see species in the riparian corridor. A river exhibit booth will also be there to learn about the environmental science issues at the Santa Clara RIver.

Summary of Project Description (See full description here. https://vcrma.org/ri-nu-wastewater-treatment-facility)

RI-NU Services, LLC requests to update and reestablish a Conditional Use Permit to operate a wastewater treatment facility at 815 Mission Rock Road. This facility would continue to accept wastewater, such as, but not limited to, porta-potty waste, septic tank waste, and oilfield wastewater. The wastewater will be treated onsite to separate solids and liquids, consolidate the treated wastes and then truck the treated wastes to off-site permitted disposal facilities.

In addition to the request to reinstate the CUP, the applicant proposes some modifications to the operation:

  • The facility will be expanded by 1.67 acres, for a total of 6.65 acres to make space for a new laboratory, equipment, and onsite truck circulation;
  • The process for treating porta potty waste and septic waste (i.e., domestic waste) will be conducted within enclosed equipment to minimize odorous emissions;
  • Re-design the layout and operations of the facility so that the treatment and processing equipment are located further from the agricultural areas that are next to the project site;
  • The facility will no longer accept any wastewater contained in plastic storage containers called totes;
  • Add four new buildings: an office, laboratory, hazardous materials storage building, and employee breakroom;
  • Add a new septic system to service the office restroom and the laboratory restroom;
  • Establish employee hours with three shifts over a 24-hour day. Waste hauling trucks will operate Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Saturday, 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.;
  • Establish a maximum number of truck trips to 100 per day with an overall maximum of 500 trucks per week.
  • Limit the daily quantity of wastewater received and treated onsite by restricting the size and number of delivery trucks. RI-NU Services, LLC proposes to reload the wastewater delivery trucks with haul away treated water to off-site disposal facilities (referred to as “back-hauling”) in order to limit the number of total truck trips coming and going from the site.

Application Submittal and Environmental Review

The most current project application was submitted to the Planning Division in October 2020 and was deemed a complete application in May 2021. The County of Ventura Planning Division reviewed the proposed project and conducted an initial environmental review. Based on this review, it was determined that the project could have negative impacts to the adjacent agriculture and have issues arise with the storage and handling of hazardous materials that are used during the treatment process. The County Planning Division has come up with feasible (achievable and enforceable) protective measures that would avoid and/or reduce these potential problems to an acceptable level. RI-NU Services LLC has agreed to implement these protective measures and conduct the wastewater treatment operation in compliance with the terms of the Conditional Use Permit. For these reasons the County Planning Division has prepared a draft Mitigated Negative Declaration (MND) as the project’s CEQA document. There will be a 45-day public review period for the draft Mitigated Negative Declaration, starting on October 14, 2021 and ending at 5 p.m. on November 30, 2021. The draft MND can be viewed on the Planning Division website at https://vcrma.org/mitigated-negative-declarations or at the County of Ventura, Resource Management Agency, Planning Division, Hall of Administration Building, 800 S. Victoria Ave., Ventura, CA 93009, on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

If you wish to provide public comments on the draft MND, please provide your written comments to the case planner, Franca Rosengren, by 5 p.m. on November 30, 2021 by mail at: County of Ventura, RMA, Planning Division, Attn: Franca A. Rosengren, 800 S. Victoria Avenue, L#1740, Ventura, CA 93009 or by email at: Franca.Rosengren@ventura.org. The case planner may also be reached by phone at: (805) 654-2045.

Friday – 11/12/2021 – ONLINE POSTCARD EVENT– ”Post Cards to High Potential Native Voters” (9:00 am PDT)

Sunday – 12/19/2021 – ONLINE – ”S05 E13: Identifying Potential Slavery-Related Records by Thinking About Slavery as a Business” (1:00pm PST)

U.S. chattel slavery wasn’t just a business. It was big business. Like any Business consumed with tracking and noting profit and loss – slavery Is recorded in any number of business-related documents. Slave insurance policies and mortgages, hiring out enslaved labor, as well as the purchasing and sale of human beings are but some of the business-related documents we need to research our
enslaved ancestors and their families. This episode is all about underscoring that slavery in the U.S was a massive business enterprise – one that left a myriad of business records. Exploring the different types of business records that evidenced the existence of our enslaved family and kin should leave you with a basis to form a research strategy and methodology to hunt down the business-related records of slavery.Show time: 4pm ESTLive URL: https://www.facebook.com/genealogyadventuresusa

There is no place in Congress for Rep. There is no place in any workplace, much less the halls of Congress, for those who harass, intimidate, and spew hate at their colleagues….” (Oh, RR fans…he is just getting warmed up!) ANYTIME – EMAIL CAMPAIGN – “Write to CEO’s to drop the U.S. Chamber of Commerce”

(From Jessica Craven) “OK. We know that across the country, democracy and voting rights are under attack.

First sign a petition: We also know that a whole bunch of businesses said they would speak up to protect our fundamental right as Americans, but there’s one problem: they’re still members of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, a group with a long history of fueling anti-democratic actions. You can read all about it here, (https://dropthechamber.org). Then sign a petition asking these companies to DROP the Chamber of Commerce.

Then do this: Go to this form, (https://www.notion.so/Tell-These-Big-Corps-to-Drop-the-US-Chamber-of-Commerce-5c60c8ccf4c14fabafb87fa70854c767) where you can click each purple link to auto-populate an email to CEOs at a major company. The “digital divide” in broadband coverage is a form of racial injustice. The FCC is asking for help to find the blind spots. Share!

We’ve all seen the photos of kids sitting in parking lots outside coffee shops, doing their homework, because their home doesn’t have internet access. (GRI) “Just less than half of households with annual family incomes less than $20,000 have home-internet access. Further, 83% of Asians and 81% of Whites have home-internet access, compared to 72% of American Indian/Alaska Natives, 70% of Hispanics, 68% of Blacks. Largely a product of America’s overall racial wealth gap, the “digital divide” is a term that has come to describe the racial and economic disparities seen in internet access for Americans.”
Articles:

(the Verve)“…The form the FCC is using for your responses (https://consumercomplaints.fcc.gov/hc/en-us/requests/new?ticket_form_id=360001440131) is decidedly rudimentary; it looks like a general complaint form, and doesn’t ask any specific questions about broadband at all (the only reference is in the header). But the FCC says it’s a stopgap on the path to a more detailed and specific reporting tool. For now, perhaps you can take a look at the FCC’s current crappy maps at your address, and tell the FCC whether you actually have the kinds of choices that the ISPs claim you have.

Postcards for DC Statehood!

Washington D.C. is a living, breathing, racial and civil rights injustice and we need to fix it!

Update: A Heritage Foundation lawyer, Zack Smith, actually stated out loud that DC residents “already impact the national debate” because members of Congress see their yard signs while driving to work. (Note – yard signs imply property ownership, so thanks, Heritage Foundation for that slap-back to the beginnings of our country, when only property owners got to vote.)

Go here for get postcards! A member has printed up a large amount. This is an easy task, both sides are already printed, ready for addressing and stamps! Instructions included.

If you’re unfamiliar with the hundreds of years that DC residents have been denied statehood, along with the rights we take for granted, like representation along with taxation, the ability to make laws without federal interference, and being able to call up the National Guard when they need it, here’s our post with lots of information and great videos. (Also 51 for 51 and DCstatehoodcoalition.org ) Both the House and Senate have reintroduced bills to fix this, H.R.51 & S.51 “WashingtonD.C. Admission Act. Another important bill –  H.R.1 – “For the People Act, declares, amongst many important voting reforms, “…that DC residents deserve full Congressional voting rights and self-government, which only statehood can provide.” (full text) (endorsements). We need to get all Democratic representatives and senators onboard both bills as cosponsors quickly as possible!

Letter Template – “Biden: Commit to close the #FirstTen immigrant detention centers!”

Letter Template here. For the last four years, immigrant communities have experienced Trump’s never-ending racist and xenophobic attacks, including a massive expansion of the immigration detention system. As President Biden begins to undo these harms, he must prioritize dismantling the cruel immigration detention system that deprives the liberty of thousands of immigrants and people seeking asylum each year.

Join Detention Watch Network, in collaboration with communities across the country, as we demand that the Biden administration fulfill its commitment to restoring humanity to the immigration system by recognizing that detention has no place in a just and humane system. People navigating their immigration cases should be able to do so in community, not behind bars in detention. We call on the Biden administration to take bold action towards ending the use of detention entirely by shutting down and ending contracts for the following ten detention centers that are emblematic of how the immigration detention system as a whole is inherently abusive, unjust, and fatally flawed beyond repair.

  1. Adelanto Detention Facility
  2. Berks County Family Residential Center
  3. South Texas Family Residential Center (Dilley)
  4. Etowah County Jail
  5. Farmville Detention Center
  6. T. Don Hutto Residential Facility (Hutto)
  7. Irwin County Detention Center
  8. Karnes County Family Residential Center
  9. Mesa Verde Detention Center
  10. Otero County Processing Center

The facilities on this list represent every facility across the country where medical neglect is common, physical and sexual abuse are widely reported, basic necessities are lacking, food is rotten, access to counsel and support is restricted, and immigrants needlessly suffer. This list provides a roadmap, a #FirstTen to communities not cages.

SEND a letter to President Biden and DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas and demand that he CLOSES the #FirstTen immigrant detention centers as a first step to abolish immigrant detention. #CommunitiesNotCages

ACLU – How do we End Racism in Policing?

The ACLU has changed it’s mind! Instead of focusing on making police departments better, they are now firmly on the side of divesting functions, power and responsibilities from police departments and tranferring them to life-giving non-police-dependent alternatives. This video covers qualified immunity, police union influence, and use of force standards, as well as the big questions on how we can stop police from being such an outsized presence in Black communities. One example of redirection – the changeover from police transport of medical emergencies to ambulances, which took place in the 1960’s. Share all these resources with your friends and family, along with the ACLU’s series of short videos called “100 Years of Racism in Policing.

Thurs 12/17: Carbon neutrality by 2045? CA has to move faster!

Full post here. Governor, 80 groups have asked you, based on science, to speed up our clean car mandate to meet state climate goals and the communities most harmed by fossils fuel pollution shouldn’t have to wait an extra five years to breathe clean air. I urge you to direct the CA Air Resources Board (CARB) to:

  1. Require 100% zero-emission vehicle sales by 2030 and a minimum 7% decrease in emissions each year from petroleum cars in the meantime.
  2. Create good jobs and ensure low-income communities of color benefit equitably from the transition.
  3. Start new clean car standards as soon as possible, no later than model year 2024.

In 1939, a ship, the St. Louis, came to our shores seeking asylum for 900 Jewish passengers fleeing their increasingly dangerous homeland. Shamefully, we turned them away and hundreds died upon their return. 80 years later, we need to demand better for those who seek safety here.

Fight fossil fuel political dominance by reducing the need for it!

Ventura County is developing a 100-megawatt, 400-megawatt hour battery storage facility to replace the need for new natural gas-powered generation. So far, Ojai is the first and only city in our county who’s made a jump to gas source reduction with an all-electrica building code, though there are still discussions as to the extent of their ordinance.

Cities and counties in California serve as guiding lights as the state navigates a transition from gas to clean-energy buildings. Motivated by the climate crisis, worsening air pollution, escalating gas rates, and safety risks from gas, a new cohort of local government leaders is emerging in California. Over 50 cities and counties across the state are considering policies to support all-electric new construction.

This blog summarizes the cities and counties that have already adopted gas-free buildings commitments or electrification building codes (i.e., “reach codes” that go beyond the statewide building code) and is regularly updated to reflect the latest wins in California. Ordinance language is also linked below.

To urge your city council members to be climate leaders and to create a gas-free future for our homes and buildings, please sign this petition.

Top 13 things you should know about our postal service! It is the leading employer of minorities (39%) and women (40%), and for three years in a row they were in Hispanic Business magazine’s annual “Diversity Elite 60” list of best companies for Hispanics, the only federal agency on the list. The USPS is also one of the largest employers of veterans, with more than 97,000.

📫 And tell everyone who wants the Postal Service to survive to do the same.

CALL/Email Action!: Urge your legislators to vote “YES” on the “Breathe Act”

Bill summery here:For decades, the federal government has incentivized mass criminalization through policies and funding programs that increase arrests, prison construction, hiring of police officers, and the militarization of police.  This funding has fueled the violent over-policing of Black people, while leaving social services and basic infrastructure that actually keep people safe woefully underfunded. The BREATHE Act proposes policy and funding that upends this violent reality. Policy is one of many tools at our disposal, and with this bill, we are creating a national standard of civil rights that will bring our demands into reality. We are not interested in someone else’s version of what is politically possible. We are interested in defending Black lives.” The bill doesn’t appear to have a number yet. Articles about it here and here.

Join the We Must Do M.O.R.E. campaign here. (Mobilize, Organize, Register and Educate People for Movement that votes!) People are coming together to create a transformative moral agenda to fight systemic racism, poverty, ecological devastation, militarism and the war economy, and the false moral narrative of religious nationalism into a powerful moral fusion movement that votes!
